Closed-method lung cancer surgery: VATS lobectomy
Prof. Dr. Burçin Çelik discussed the advantages of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery in early-stage lung cancer.

Thoracic surgeon Prof. Dr. Burçin Çelik discussed lung cancer operations performed with the closed method. Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), Prof. Çelik explained, is a minimally invasive approach in which thoracic operations are performed with video assistance; procedures that were done as open surgery for years can now be performed with closed techniques thanks to advances in technology.
Lung cancer is the most common cancer worldwide. In Türkiye, around 30,000 new cases are expected each year. About 82 percent are non-small cell lung cancer, and 27 percent of those patients are operable. VATS can be preferred for the surgical treatment of early-stage lung cancer.
Advantages of VATS lobectomy
According to Prof. Çelik, minimally invasive thoracic procedures have entered major surgery because of reduced morbidity and mortality, shorter hospital stays and an early return to normal life. The surgical principles are the same as in open surgery; the technique differs. The approach can establish a diagnosis by sampling undiagnosed lung lesions and can be preferred for early-stage lung cancer, with less trauma and pain, faster discharge and better cosmetic results.
